Climate vulnerability and adaptation
How can we understand climate vulnerability beyond isolated geophysical phenomena? In this lecture, Assist. Prof. Dr. Eugene Richardson (Harvard Medical School, Harvard University) introduces counteradaptation as a novel theoretical framework for advancing environmental social science.
Drawing on research in Sierra Leone, Brazil, and Nepal, the talk argues that people do not simply adapt to climate change; their survival strategies are inextricably entangled with the realities of global coloniality. Counteradaptation sharpens political ecological accounts of climate vulnerability and provides criteria for evaluating policy pathways, helping to distinguish between interventions that perpetuate transnational relations of inequality and those that fulfill reparative obligations.
