News of the HCE The HCE is a Central Research Institution and Elected a New Board of Directors
On January 1, 2026, the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE) was transformed from an interdisciplinary research incubator into a Central Research Institution (CRI) of Heidelberg University. The HCE will remain a research incubator until the end of 2026.
On January 29, 2026, the first general meeting of the CRI took place, at which the founding members of the HCE joined the CRI and elected its new board of directors.
Key members include the new Executive Director Prof. Dr. André Butz (Institute for Environmental Physics), Deputy Executive Director Prof. Dr. Jale Tosun (Institute for Political Science), Prof. Dr. Tabea Bork-Hüffer (Institute of Geography), and Prof. Dr. Thomas Rausch (Center of Organismal Studies).
