Program Winter Semester 2023-2024
Power Boost for Climate Action
As the impact of climate change is rapidly increasing, accelerating climate action becomes more urgent than ever before. Therefore, the Heidelberg Bridge sheds light on four crucial areas for speeding up mitigation: the private sector, cities, individual measures, and the role of academia in major transformation challenges. The keynotes and panel discussions will cover how new regulation, e.g. through the EU Green Deal, new technologies, such as satellite and sensor data, or changes in agriculture and nutrition could contribute to catalysing mitigation efforts. The event series will feature distinguished speakers, such as Prof. Dr. Mark Lawrence from the Research Institute for Sustainability – Helmholtz Centre Potsdam.
Our moderator for the four events is Dr. Bernd Welz, President of the Board of the Klimastiftung für Bürger (Klima Arena) in Sinsheim.

Format: keynote & discussion
Thursday, 16.11.2023, 12:30 p.m.
Discover how the convergence of scientific advancements, including high-resolution GHG emissions data and emerging governance models, creates a crucial window of opportunity. We'll explore how these developments in geophysical sciences and geoinformatics can empower policymakers to craft impactful climate mitigation policies and citizens to understand the collective effect of their mitigation measures.
Dr. Sanam Vardag is a senior scientist at the Institute of Environmental Physics working on simulating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from local to global scales. Sanam is passionate about improving the understanding of the carbon cycle and supporting greenhouse gas mitigation scientifically. From 2017-2020, she was executive manager of the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE) where she developed new formats of interdisciplinary environmental exchange. The experiences from leading an interdisciplinary environmental center still shape her research today.
