The HCE “Heidelberg Bridge” Colloquium
The “Heidelberger Bridge” colloquium is a public event series offered in cooperation between the HCE and the "Klima Arena". It offers a platform for interdisciplinary exchange inside and outside of Heidelberg University, as well as communication with the interested public. HCE members, researchers and guest speakers share their expertise and discuss current sustainability topics with the audience.

The event will take place hybrid in the Learn@Lunch format.
We meet at 12.30 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Marsilius Kolleg (INF 130.1, ground floor) and online via zoom. A small snack will be provided for participants on site.

Catalyzing the Sustainability Transformation
This year's Heidelberg Bridge focuses on the social science dimensions of climate change. The public lecture series is dedicated to the topics of the university environment, legal aspects and ethics as well as the future skills and green skills required for sustainable development. Among other things, the keynotes will address how the university can be designed as a sustainable place of work, learning and research, what measures have been taken so far and what changes are still needed. Renowned speakers will take part in the series of events, including Prof. Dr. Marc-Philipp Weller from the Institute for Foreign and International Private and Business Law, Prof. Dr. Susanne Mantel from the Faculty of Philosophy at Heidelberg University and Romain Boitard from the European Training Foundation.

Climate Litigation - A Global Phenomenon

The event will present and discuss the phenomenon of "climate change litigation". It will explain what successes court proceedings have achieved and what successes they can bring in the fight against climate change.
Prof. Dr. Marc-Philippe Weller is Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Diversity. He is Director of the Institute for Foreign and International Private and Business Law at Heidelberg University.
As Vice-Rector, his responsibilities include Heidelberg University's international partnerships, in particular the European University Alliance 4EU+ and Heidelberg University's centers abroad (Santiago de Chile, New York, Delhi, Kyoto). Legal compliance is another area of responsibility of his Vice-Rectorate.

Romain Boitard
Join Romain Boitard at his upcoming conference presentation, where he'll explore the critical role of education and labour reforms in navigating the green transition within the EU Neighborhood. He will shed light on the multifaceted challenges and emerging opportunities as these regions adapt to the evolving climate landscape. Boitard's analysis, mostly based on the European Training Foundation’s research, offers valuable insights into system changes necessary for a sustainable global future, focusing on skill development, policy innovation, and the integration of both green competences and practices into the economic fabric of the EU and its neighbouring countries.
Romain Boitard possesses extensive expertise in science and public administration, and currently leads the European Training Foundation's initiatives related to skilling for the green transition, emphasizing inclusion, social protection, education, and employment reforms. Since joining the ETF in 2019, he has been instrumental in crafting policy, authoring position papers, and designing training programmes that marry innovative approaches with formal methodologies to foster sustainable development. His work focuses on tracking and integrating skills development and job creation to support a fair and equitable shift towards a green economy in and around the European Union.
Climate change and Ethics

Prof. Dr. Susanne Mantel
The lecture identifies and distinguishes some important philosophical perspectives on climate change, in particular questions of ethics, motivation to act, and political philosophy. These include the questions of what a just limitation of climate emissions would look like (ethics), why people find it particularly difficult to motivate themselves to limit their climate emissions, and what role political action could play in the implementation of just climate policy. The aim is to outline some basic ideas on each of these questions and to enter into a discussion about them.
Prof. Dr. Susanne Mantel has been Professor of Practical Philosophy at Heidelberg University since 2023. Her particular research interests lie in the area of reasons for action and normativity research, as well as within applied ethics in migration ethics and climate ethics.
